How Your Body Digests Food

The food you eat goes on a long journey inside you. Along the way your body breaks it into tiny pieces, keeps the useful parts, and sends the rest out. That journey is called digestion — and it starts the moment food touches your tongue.

Most people think digestion happens in the stomach. It actually starts the moment you take a bite — with your teeth, your tongue and your spit. Try the two cards.

Take a bite of a roti or a piece of bread and chew it for a long, long time — much longer than you normally would. Something surprising happens: it starts to taste a little sweet. Nothing sweet was added. Your mouth did that.

Here is how. Your teeth cut and crush the food into small bits. Your tongue pushes the bits around and mixes them with salivaThe watery spit your mouth makes. So chewing is the first stage of digestion, and it matters. Food that is chewed well is already half-prepared when it reaches your stomach. That is why grown-ups say 'chew properly' — they are right.

AFTER CHEWING FOR A MINUTE

Your saliva has started turning the starch in the bread into sugar. Digestion has begun.

What just happened

Saliva also carries enzymes, tiny helpers that start turning starch into sugar. That is why the bread tastes sweet after a long chew, and why digestion is already under way before you swallow.

Common misconception

“Digestion only happens in the stomach.” — It begins in your mouth. Teeth, tongue and saliva do the first part of the job. The stomach is the second stop, not the first.

The road inside you

The small intestine is the star. It is about six metres long in a grown-up — longer than a car — but it is coiled up so tightly that it fits in your belly. All that length gives food plenty of time and space to be absorbed.

Every bite you swallow makes this trip. It takes a long time — many hours from swallowing to the end — and most of it happens without you feeling a thing.

One thing to watch for: the food does not fall down. It is pushed. The walls of the food pipe, stomach and intestines are made of muscle, and they squeeze in waves, a bit like squeezing toothpaste along a tube. What just happened

You followed one bite through all five stops. It was squeezed along by muscles (that is peristalsis), broken down smaller at each stage, and in the small intestine the useful parts left the tube and entered the blood. Only the leftovers reached the large intestine. The bite got smaller and smaller because your body kept what it needed.

Common misconception

“Food goes down because we swallow hard and it falls.” — Food is pushed, not dropped. The muscles in the tube squeeze in waves. That is why you can swallow lying flat, and why astronauts eat normally in space where nothing falls.

This is not a test you can fail. It is a way to find out what has stuck. If you get a stop wrong, the amber marker shows you where — and one scroll up, the diagram and the animation are waiting for you to check.

A tip for remembering: think about what happens to the food at each stop. It gets cut (mouth), pushed (food pipe), churned (stomach), absorbed (small intestine), and dried out (large intestine). Cut, push, churn, absorb, dry.

Common misconception

“The large intestine comes before the small one, because 'large' sounds more important.” — Small comes first. 'Small' and 'large' describe how wide the tube is, not how important it is or where it sits. The small intestine is narrower but much longer, and it comes first.
